Title: IMRC Center Graduate Laboratory Technician IV
Department: Innovative Media Research and Commercialization Center (IMRC Center)
Reports to: IMRC Center Operations Manager, IMRC Center Research Engineer

Exercise independent judgment, leadership, and initiative while refining your technical and interpersonal skills at the Innovative Media Research and Commercialization Center. 

Purpose/Overview:
The Innovative Media Research and Commercialization (IMRC) Center provides fee-based design and
prototyping services to the UMS research and educational community and external clients (e.g., government, industry, NGO), with a primary focus on innovative and artistic technologies in support of commercialization.

  • The Graduate Laboratory Technician IV position is an essential member of the IMRC staff. It is also
  • responsible for assisting the IMRC administration in completing project goals and achieving the stated purpose of the IMRC Center.
  • This position is responsible for performing highly complex tasks at a graduate level following standard processes and procedures.
  • This position is often required to function without direct supervision while demanding a high level of independent judgment, initiative, and expertise.
  • This position is often required to provide IMRC Center undergraduate student employees with orientation, training, and mentoring needed to perform essential tasks safely and efficiently.
  • As the Graduate Laboratory Technician IV position is a representative of the IMRC Center and the University of Maine, professionalism and a positive attitude are essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Sets up, operates, cleans, breaks down, and stores IMRC Center laboratory resources
  • Assists IMRC Center user base with the correct and safe use of facility resources
  • Performs undergraduate student mentorship and leadership, which may include coordination of activities of other student employees
  • Assists with documentation of facility resource usage through maintained record keeping and data entry
  • Maintains inventory and performs preventative maintenance on IMRC laboratory resources
  • Assists in the completion of project goals and services up to and including leading teams in the creation and implementation of projects and initiatives
  • Assists in the integration and implementation of Experiential Programs (EPIC) at IMRC Center
  • Communicates verbally, in writing, and through digital and social media to provide information about IMRC Center and affiliated programs and activities
  • Completes all applicable laboratory safety training and contributes to maintaining and updating training materials and procedures
  • Makes referrals to other campus departments and resources
  • Conducts tours of the facility and participates as liaison to various campus partners (AMC, Foster Center for Student Innovation, ASCC, etc.)

Knowledge and Skills Qualifications:

  • Must maintain a minimum enrollment of six credit hours in an MA/MS or Ph.D. program each semester and one credit hour during the summer.
  • Must have the ability to lift more than 25 lbs
  • Must be responsible, pay close attention to detail, and be willing to learn highly technical processes. All UMS employees are required to comply with applicable policies and procedures, complete workplace-related screenings, and complete required employee training, such as Information Security, Safety Training, Workplace Violence, and sexual harassment.

Work Schedule:
This position begins on 9/1/25 and continues until 8/31/26 and is for a duration of approximately twelve
months. The expected schedule for this position is 20 hours per week.

A recurring weekly work schedule for this position is established by the IMRC Center Operations Manager in order to meet the needs of the IMRC Center. Normal University of Maine business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Work outside of normal business hours may be necessary in order to complete the requirements of the position and may include recurring scheduled shifts during evenings and weekends.

Members of IMRC staff may have opportunities to attend conferences, events, and expos related to the nature of the position and the stated purpose of the IMRC Center. IMRC leadership strongly encourages professional development opportunities and supports all staff members to attend these events as time and budget permits.

Schedule for Evaluation:
Employee evaluation for this position is scheduled once each year and will include a performance evaluation, a review of academic standing, and opportunities for employee feedback.

Compensation:
The IMRC Center Graduate Laboratory Technician IV earns a stipend of approximately $2,000.00 per month, a full tuition waiver for up to 9 graduate credits per semester and up to 6 credits in the summer, and a credit for 50% of the cost of the UMaine graduate assistant health insurance policy (if needed).
