2023 Spring Trip
During mid April of 2023, the geology club took an exciting trip to the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum in Bethel. Here members were exposed to spectacular mineral specimens from both Maine and all over the world, and club members were even given the opportunity to hold both Lunar and Martian rocks!
Wrapping up the museum tour, club members were given an exclusive look into the lab of the museum’s experimental petrologist Dr. Al Falster. The following day, Dr. Falster accompanied us to the Emmons Quarry, a private quarry owned by the museum, where students were able to collect rocks and minerals for there own personal collection.
2018 Spring Trip
In May, 19 University of Maine Geology Club members and two faculty took a 10-day field trip to Iceland.
The focus of the student-planned trip was on glacial deposits and volcanic rocks in the south of Iceland. The group toured Thingvellir National Park, site of Iceland’s first government and the center of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge Rift Valley where North America and Europe are separating; Geysir, the site of the original geyser; and Gullfoss, Iceland’s largest waterfall, which descends 60 meters into a fracture zone.
The group also spent a day visiting museums and shopping in Reykjavik and taking a dip in the Blue Lagoon, a popular hot spring.
The trip was supported by UMaine alumnus Scott Golden’s contribution to the School of Earth and Climate Sciences along with contributions from the Geological Society of Maine, the Maine Mineralogical and Geological Society, and the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture.
2016 Spring Trip

The trip, led by staff advisers Dr. Alicia (Cici) Cruz-Aribe and Marty Yates, traveled round trip to San Francisco, visited Big Sur, the Tiburon Peninsula, and Point Reyes, and toured the Monterrey Aquarium. Thirteen undergraduate students participated in the trip, which was made possible with grants from the Golden Fund, the Geological Society of Maine, the UMaine Student Government and Geology Club fundraising.
