Northeast Archives Information
The Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History, formerly housed at the Maine Folklife Center, are now held by UMaine’s Fogler Library Special Collections. Special Collections staff can answer questions about access to and use of the archives, as well as the policies and steps required for donating materials to the collection. Fogler Special Collections are open during regular business hours, as well as some evenings and Saturdays. Please note that the Northeast Archives are held in a separate Annex building; their use requires prior notification of Special Collections staff. More details on hours and access are available on the Special Collections website.
The Maine Folklife Center is in South Stevens Hall, which is adjacent to the Memorial Union (student center) and Fogler Library, at the south end of the University of Maine “mall.” We are also close to the Collins Center for the Arts, with parking behind the Center. The following directions might be helpful in finding the Center.
From I-95 North or South
Take Stillwater Ave. exit. If you are coming from the South, after you exit the highway, take a right onto Stillwater Ave.; if from the North, turn left onto Stillwater Ave. Continue on through the first three lights. When you reach the fourth light you will see a McDonald’s on the left and a KFC on the right. Take a right onto College Avenue (speed limit 25 mph and strictly enforced).
Continue for a little over a mile on College Avenue. On the left you will see the Alfond Ice Arena. Turn left into campus immediately after the Arena. Head up the incline and you will see the large M on the Memorial Gym. The road takes a sharp right and then a sharp left. On your right will be the grassy mall. Continue on this road and take your second right. Drive about a quarter mile until you see the Collins Center for the Arts sign, then turn right. Follow this road until you see a Visitor Parking lot. Stevens Hall will be straight ahead, and South Stevens ahead and to the left. The Maine Folklife Center is on the first floor of South Stevens.
Except for a few metered spaces, there is no parking without a permit at UMaine. Visitor permits are available at the Visitor’s Center in Buchanan Alumni House on College Ave.; at Parking Services in the basement of the Memorial Union; at the Public Safety building on Rangeley Road; and at Bear Necessities in the Alfond Arena. If you contact Folklife Center staff before your visit, we can arrange to have a parking permit ready for you.
