Using Archival Material to Inspire Art: One Example
University of Maine at Augusta student Joshua Roberts created the following series of panels as part of a project for a class in graphic storytelling taught by Peter Precourt. The project won the Jurors’ Choice Award at the 2017 AMA Juried Student Art Exhibition. The series depicts a rural Maine family struggling with poverty, an alcoholic father, and a mother who dies in childbirth from the perspective of a child, as told years later in an oral history interview. The work shows the impact that archival material can have when told through the eyes of creative visual artists.
