Began Conservation Science NRT Program Fall 2021

The interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary focus of the NRT program and the opportunity to work with professionals in the field for an internship were especially attractive. I believe that science often requires collaboration, and the university’s program and the NRT program both emphasized the importance of communication and working outside of one’s silo.

I have a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in Biology with a minor in Anthropology. I am broadly interested in understanding the impacts of wicked problems like climate change and the pandemic on vulnerable communities — both animals and people — and developing strategies that prioritize their needs as I do not believe that ecological systems live in a biological bubble. I value the incorporation of traditional ecological knowledge and collaboration with stakeholders to create these sustainable compromises. I hope to incorporate my experiences engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders abroad into understanding the experiences of those in Maine. My current research is looking to assess how COVID-19 has impacted the risk perceptions of visitors and stakeholders of parks in Maine and identify resulting changes in behavior.
