Who is eligible to participate?

Enrolled UMaine students are eligible to participate, as long as they are not expressly disallowed in that sport’s rules. Participants MUST bring their student ID to all Intramural sports activities (games, meets, matches, etc.).

How can I register?

You must register online via IM Leagues.

Do I need to have a team affiliation?

You may register as a team with an organization such as a Residence Hall or a Greek fraternity/sorority, or you can sign up as a free agent.

What are the registration deadlines?

Registration deadlines are listed in the signup information for each event. Entries submitted after the deadline cannot be guaranteed a place in the activity. Campus Recreation reserves the right to refuse or accept any late entry. New players cannot be added once the league season has ended and a team enters into a divisional or All- University playoff. In team tournaments which do not have a corresponding league season, teams may add new players through quarter final games.

What rules apply?

UMaine Intramural sports follow the Constitution of the Intramural Athletic Association of the University of Maine. All participants are required to obey the Sportsmanship Guidelines.

Code of Sportsmanship:

  1. Conduct of Players
    1. Toward Teammates
  2. Demonstrate teamwork, cooperation, and subordination of the individual to the needs of the team by:
    1. Avoiding criticism, sarcasm, and crabbing;
    2. Reporting on time for all contests;
    3. Extending oneself to the limits of strength, endurance;
    4. Courage.
  3. Toward Opponents:
    1. Avoid making uncomplimentary remarks toward opponents and treat opponents with respect and consideration;
    2. Point out rules and violations while avoiding pointing out opponent’s violations;
    3. Compliment skillful performance by opponents;
    4. Win without boasting and lose without excuses.
  4. Toward Officials:
    1. Never question official’s decisions, which are a judgment type (e.g., in softball, was the pitch a strike or a ball?);
    2. When officials misinterpret rules, avoid heckling or arguing with them, but file a protest within the time limit set by the Intramural Constitution;
    3. Appreciate that the official is contributing his/her time for a very nominal wage to do a needed but difficult and thankless job and that he/she is making every effort to be impartial; and
    4. Realize that good officials never change their decision simply because players or spectators heckle or pressure them and that this kind of action will likely decrease the official’s efficiency. Good sportsmanship is simply a practical application of the Golden Rule to sports. The practice of good sportsmanship makes greater, not lesser, demands upon strength, determination, and self-control. It is not the soft or gentle way, but rather the tougher way, because the good sportsman does not look for special favors or advantages, but grants these to his/her opponent and then strives harder to win.

Player-Spectator Behavior Code

Profanity, attacks on officials, and altercations in the UMaine Intramural Sports Program are entirely unacceptable. These actions are absolutely out of line with the philosophy of the Intramural Sports Program. Therefore, the Executive Board of the Intramural Athletic Association has drawn up the following code:

  1. Unsportsmanlike Conduct
    1. Profanity
    2. Altercations
    3. Attacks on Officials
  2. Minimum Penalties
    1. Aggressor- 2-game suspension for the first offense. Disqualification for the second offense.
    2. Players leaving bench and coming onto playing floor or field-2-game suspension each player and loss of 25 points from All-Points total. Player (s) will be disqualified for second and subsequent offenses.
    3. Spectators coming out of the stands onto floor or field-organization lose 50 points from All-Points total. Second offense-team/organization disqualification.

Note: In addition to the above sanctions, Campus Recreation will forward unsportsmanlike incidents to the Director of Judicial Affairs.

Note: Listed below is a synopsis of important Intramural Sports Policies and Procedures. For a more detailed explanation.

Rosters and Roster Additions

  1. Team Sports: A team’s roster is formed throughout the regular season. All players participating in a game must be listed on the game’s scorecard. The players who are listed will be entered onto that team’s roster.  The manager/captain  is responsible for ensuring that each scorecard, including the roster, is complete and accurate (i.e., all team members who participated in that game are listed on the scorecard). Names of individuals can be added to the original roster, prior to the new team member playing, by listing the player’s name as well as his/her ID number on the scorecard.  A player must participate in at least one regular season game to be eligible to participate in the playoffs.
  2. Tournaments: A team’s roster can be built over the course of the preliminary rounds of the tournament. As in team sports, the individuals listed on the scorecards constitute a team’s roster. Managers are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of the scorecards. In tournament events, roster additions may be made through the quarterfinal games.
  3. Individual, Dual, and Team Meets: For meets, a team must submit its roster prior to the event, and prior to the roster deadline if one is set. Rosters may not be modified after the roster deadline.

Eligibility

  1. Sport Club members and Intercollegiate Athletes: Teams that have Sport Club members and/or current/former intercollegiate athletes on their rosters should check the Intramural Sports Program Managers’ Manual for restrictions on these participants.

Forfeits:

  1. Teams that show up later than 15 minutes after scheduled start will be assessed a forfeit, loss for the contest and will be declared ineligible for the playoffs.
  2. A forfeit is defined as a contest not played because a team does not show up, or if the contest is not played because of lack of players.  A forfeit can be avoided if the shorthanded team picks up independent players before the 15 minutes have elapsed and then they can play a modified contest while receiving an automatic loss.
  3. Teams must be fully ready to play within 5 minutes of the scheduled contest start time.  Games starting between  the 5-15 minute grace period due to one team not being ready will result in an automatic loss for the violating team; however a time modified game will occur.  The violating team will still be playoff eligible.

Sportsmanship Rating (where applicable)

  1. The officials shall rate each team in each contest. A team begins an Intramural Sport contest or event with a total of 5 sportsmanship points.  A meet has a total of 5 sportsmanship points, based on the conduct of the team for the duration of the meet. During the course of the contest, teams may lose points in their behavior deteriorates. It is not possible to receive a sportsmanship rating zero or below.
  2. Playoffs: In order to be eligible for playoffs, a team must average a sportsmanship score of 4 or higher for the regular season. Once in playoffs, a team must receive 4 points or higher in each contest in order to advance to the next round. Should a team win a playoff game, but receives a sportsmanship rating below 4, their opponent shall advance if they earned a qualifying sportsmanship rating.
