Music - Auditions

In addition to meeting the University’s admission standards, applicants must demonstrate musical ability in performance on their major instruments or voice before a jury of the music faculty. Before the University can review your application for admission, applicants must pass an audition.

Space is limited in these majors and students need to apply and audition early. To ensure full consideration for scholarships, please apply no later than February 1st. Auditions are arranged through the Music Division office, where a listing of audition requirements for the various disciplines may be obtained. To schedule an audition, please call 207-581-4703.

At least one week prior to the audition, applicants must submit a Music Education Essay.

If you are applying for admission and auditioning to major in music at the University of Maine, you should:

  1. Bring a list of repertoire studied in the last two years.
  2. Prepare two pieces in differing styles for your audition – one showing technical facility and one stressing fluency, phrasing and lyricism.
  3. Be prepared to sight read in both styles. The Audition Committee will choose music to sight-read.
  4. Additional audition information: Piano, Percussion, and Voice.

Memorization is required for vocal auditions.

If it is not possible or convenient for you to audition in person, you may submit a recent taped performance instead.
