An article in the Alaska Dispatch, originally published in the Christian Science Monitor, about hazing at secondary schools and universities becoming more frequent and more harmful than traditional pranks cited a 2008 study led by University of Maine researchers Elizabeth Allan and Mary Madden on behalf of the National Collaborative for Hazing Research and Prevention. The researchers found through a survey of more than 11,000 students that 47 percent reported experiencing a form of hazing or ritualized initiation behavior ranging from embarrassment and humiliation to sexual abuse or criminal conduct.
