SSI SEMINAR – From Science to Solutions with Andrew Gonzales

From Science to Solutions: Biodiversity Research for Global Environmental Change

Andrew Gonzalez, McGill University

Gonzales will present results from the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Science’s research on biodiversity and ecological networks. Presented first will be some key theoretical principles from metacommunity ecology that can guide the management of landscapes for biodiversity despite uncertainty. He will build on this background to describe a project focused on designing an ecological network for the city of Montreal. The Centre’s approach emphasizes landscape configuration as a key parameter that can be tuned to suggest alternatives that maintain biodiversity and ecosystem services whilst being resilient to ongoing land use change and climate change over the coming century.

Dr. Andrew Gonzalez is Professor in Department of Biology, McGill University, and the founding Director of the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Science. His research is focused on the causes and consequences of biodiversity change, a theme he explores using a range of theoretical and experimental approaches.
