Whenever an employee of the University is served with a summons, subpoena, court order, complaint or other court document relating to a University matter (as distinct from a private, personal issue), he or she should (a) immediately call the Office of University Counsel at 621-3071 to report the nature of the document, (b) FAX a copy to University Counsel, 621-3074, and (c) by next mail send the original document to the Office of University Counsel, 46 University Drive, Augusta, ME 04330-9410, keeping a copy for your own records. The time limits for answering court documents are very short. For example, an answer to a complaint must be filed with the court within 20 days of service of the complaint. The University’s legal rights could be jeopardized if not answered on time. In many instances an insurance carrier must also be informed at an early date. In the event of a complaint or notice related to an agency dealing with a discrimination investigation, it should be faxed, 581-1214, or sent to the Office of Equal Opportunity (Alumni Hall) and a copy will be forwarded to Legal Counsel.
