The University of Maine Student Government Inc. (UMSG) is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Corporation built with the intention of improving student life here on campus. UMSG is a distinct entity from the University of Maine, but maintains a special cooperative relationship as a direct-funded organization. With a yearly budget of roughly $900,000 assessed by the undergraduate activity fee, this organization works tirelessly to use that money on behalf of students in a manner consistent with or organizing principles, and any professional non-profit. Money is allocated every week back to the over 200 clubs and organizations on campus recognized by UMSG. Beyond the allocation of money to clubs and organizations, this budget also covers the expenses to host concerts or events at reduced cost to the undergraduate students. UMSG also manages professional legal and risk management assistance for students and clubs.

Senators and Executives strive to represent every student on this campus to the university, the university system, and the wider community. This organization is the voice of a constituency of students who see problems they want to fix every day.

The President of Student Government is responsible for leading the executive branch of UMSG, Inc., ensuring that all actions, decisions, and policies align with the organization’s mission. This role serves as the primary representative for the undergraduate student body and leads organizational initiatives.

This role includes:

  • Being accountable for all actions, decisions, and policies of the executive branch.
  • Ensuring adherence to the UMSG, Inc. Constitution and General Student Senate Standing Rules.
  • Leading and setting the direction for UMSG, Inc. at a strategic level.
  • Chairing Student Government Cabinet and Executive Committee meetings.
  • Attending all General Student Senate, Executive Budgetary Committee, and Student Entertainment Committee meetings.
  • Representing the student body’s interests to faculty, administration, and state leaders.
  • Signing all resolutions after Senate and Cabinet approval.
  • Handling legal or audit emergencies during vacations in consultation with the UMSG, Inc. attorney.

This role includes:

  • Serving as the President of the General Student Senate (GSS) and representing the GSS’s interests externally.
  • Calling and presiding over all GSS meetings.
  • Coordinating and overseeing the activities of the Student Government alongside the President.
  • Acting as a voting member of both the President’s Cabinet and the Executive Budgetary Committee (EBC).
  • Coordinating nominations and elections for leadership positions within the GSS.
  • Filling vacancies within the GSS, including chair and liaison positions, with the advice and approval of the GSS.

The Vice President of Student Organizations serves as the main resource for student groups at the University of Maine, overseeing organization recognition, policies, and support.

  • Planning and coordinating campus events, including concerts, performances, and guest lectures.
  • Managing the Student Entertainment budget in collaboration with the Vice President of Financial Affairs.
  • Approving contracts and working with Legal Services for event agreements.
  • Chairing the Student Entertainment Committee (SEC) and reporting event decisions to the General Student Senate.

The Vice President of Financial Affairs manages UMSG’s financial operations, including overseeing the $750,000 budget, advising on financial policy, and ensuring transparency in financial matters.

  • Approving and overseeing funding for student organizations.
  • Chairing the Executive Budgetary Committee (EBC) and reporting financial decisions to the General Student Senate.
  • Ensuring annual audits of UMSG accounts and financial compliance.

The Vice President of Student Leadership is responsible for overseeing leadership development initiatives, ensuring the policies of the Division of Student Leadership Development are followed, and supporting student leaders within UMSG. This role plays a vital part in empowering undergraduate students at the University of Maine to take on leadership roles and develop their leadership skills.

  • Chairing the Student Leadership Committee (SLC), presiding over meetings, keeping attendance, and reporting decisions to the General Student Senate.

The Assistant Vice President for Financial Affairs (AVPFA) plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of the University of Maine Student Government, Inc. (UMSG). This role is focused on assisting with budgeting, financial management, and oversight of all financial transactions related to the Student Government. The AVPFA works closely with the Vice President for Financial Affairs to ensure that all financial activities are in accordance with UMSG policies and regulations.

  • Assisting the Vice President for Financial Affairs in preparing the UMSG budget and ensuring proper allocation of funds.
  • Managing and tracking UMSG financial transactions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with established guidelines.
