The UMaine chapter of Active Minds is dedicated to changing the conversation surrounding mental health and suicide. We hold weekly meetings to discuss various mental health related topics, provide resources and do fun de-stressing activities.

The group welcomes different students from African countries and also other students who are not from African countries. The group supports incoming new students in adjusting to the US culture and makes them feel welcomed here as many of the members of this group are international students. The group also organizes cultural activities on campus such as Culturefest, the international dance festival, multicultural thanksgiving, and African night events. In addition, we also do other outside bonding activities. AFSA also organizes travels to Harvard University for the annual African Development Conference.

The objective of this Chapter shall be to afford an opportunity for students of any field who have an interest in chemical science to become better acquainted, to secure the intellectual stimulation that arises from a professional association, to obtain experience in preparing and presenting technical material before chemical audiences, to foster a professional spirit among the members, to instill a professional pride in the chemical sciences, to create and promote chemistry outreach programs, and to foster an awareness of the responsibilities and challenges facing the modern chemist. We host events such as program in a box (national ACS webinars), game/movie nights, tabling, demos, fundraising, etc. We also provide undergraduates with the ability to make connections with the chemistry faculty and upperclassmen to help them through their college career and future endeavors.

Best Buddies is an organization that gives individuals with IDD’s (Intellectual Developmental Disabilities) an opportunity to have one-to-one friendships as well as a college experience with the students of UMaine. We meet monthly with the whole group, one to one relationships are required to meet monthly outside of the club. Best Buddies is a very care free and lighthearted environment for students and buddies. Our buddies in the surrounding area look forward to events and time spent with students going to football, basketball, and hockey games whereas they would not have the chance to do so without this organization. Being simply a friend and not a paid worker to our buddies gives them a chance to open up their small circles of people they typically have.

The Blade Society teaches both sport fencing and rapier combat (basic and intermediate levels). The club promotes interest in the use and history of blade weapons while providing a fun and safe environment for the UMaine community. No experience is necessary and equipment is available through the club.

Camp Kesem at the University of Maine is a nonprofit student-led group which serves children whose parent or caregiver has or has had cancer. We host a free summer camp for these children and provide them with year-round support services.

Concrete Canoe offers a chance for engineering students to apply the skills they learn in class to a practical project. Student team members design, analyze, finance, construct, transport, present and paddle the canoe that is built in a regional competition.

Coral Club is an undergraduate organization with specific focuses in education and outreach regarding reef research. Our mission is to educate students and the general public about coral and aquarium care. We have many projects going on at once. Currently we maintain 2 reef tanks in the ARC, run fundraisers for the club and other non-profits, and actively table at events to spread awareness for coral conservation.

UMaine Crew is a competitive rowing team that is run and organized by university students. We practice on the beautiful Stillwater River during the fall and spring seasons and compete in many regattas throughout New England. During the winter, we shift our focus to indoor endurance training. Our team is open to all undergraduate and graduate students of any experience level. We pride ourselves in creating a safe and enthusiastic team environment!

The purpose of the Economics Club is to create a community for students to socialize, collaborate, and discuss economics. We also aim to encourage and promote student research within the school of economics. We will have events like economics trivia nights, movie nights, fundraisers, and research presentations. With these research presentations, anyone in the UMaine Economics community (Faculty, Staff, and Students) will be able to present past research. This research can be anything: a term paper, a senior capstone, a graduate thesis, a Ph.D. Thesis, or a journal article. Our goal is to show undergraduates, especially first and second year students, how economic research looks through all levels of academia. These presentations can be a formal 30 minute explanation, or a short informal 5 minute introduction to the topic.

The Ewe-Maine Icelandic Sheep Club offers students of all majors the opportunity to learn about sheep maintenance, ruminant nutrition, and lamb care. Students care the sheep during the year and lamb the ewes in the spring. This club provides great animal and veterinary experience. Students often perform basic maintenance practices such as hoof trimming, vaccinations, shearing, and halter training. The club also exposes the public to agricultural practices.

FAROG (Franco-American Resource Opportunity Group), is a group of students who meet monthly for a meal and discussion. The FAROG student group also participates in community events and planned trips. We are French club, a club for students that are interested in either learning more French, improving their knowledge, or just talking to others in French. We play board games that are either in French or bonus points are awarded for French words. Any skill level is accepted and anyone who wants to speak or understand French is welcome.

The Game Developers Guild would be a collection of artists, music makers, programmers, and writers, all interested in creating video games or just wanting to have a safe space to work on their passion projects while socializing with others. We would be offering a relaxed environment where students can feel like their skills that may otherwise go neglected, are appreciated and can see how their skills can intermix with other peoples talents. This could happen as our club may participate in game jams, where all of our skills would be put to use to create a video game in a certain time period and submitted to an online contest to be compared against other video games.

The purpose of the University of Maine Geology Club is to get students more interested in the world of geology and provide people with a community to share their interest in geology. We organize several field excursions throughout the year in order to provide students with ample experience in geology that they can carry with them into the academic realm.

The Green Team provides an inclusive community to discuss environmental issues and awareness. During our meetings, we participate in activities related to sustainability; such as food recovery, trail maintenance, and recycling. Hillel holds events throughout the year for different holidays as well as weekly meetings to plan these events. We help Jewish students to connect with other students, faculty, a staff, as well as to the greater Bangor area. Hillel organizes celebrations and social activities revolving around Jewish life. The Honors College Student Advisory Board serves as the representative organization of the honors student body to Student Government and the Honors College faculty and staff. Members work together to build community within the Honors College through initiatives and programs that reflect the key values of the College. Delegates from the Board are given the opportunity to provide input and feedback on the College’s curriculum and procedures, serve as ambassadors of the College at public events and meetings, and participate in the organization of the annual Maine Day Meal Packout.

The Horticulture Club is an inclusive club that aims to educate members about plants and to participate in creative plant-related activities. Such activities and workshops include plant propagation, landscaping opportunities on campus, plant pressing, and plant identification. In past years we have traveled to botanical gardens around Maine and participated in Maine Flower Shows.

I would like to start a club that provides a place for Indigenous students like myself to continue cultural practices. It would be open to anyone who would like to learn more about Native American culture, beliefs, practices, food, and everything else. I would like to have guest speakers, basket/jewelry making, and trips to the Penobscot Nation for community service activities. Hopefully, we could contact the Wabanki Center to email students about this club, to inform people about it and gain members/vice presidents, etc.

The Professional Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers. The IEEE brings together like minded engineers that have an interest in some type of electrical engineering. The club is open for any discipline. We hold engineering conferences, have strong connections to the electrical engineering world and bring students together from different engineering majors to collaborate.

Not only is this club the International Affairs Association, which represents all things International Affairs related at UMaine, but we are also the Model UN team! Model UN is an involved extracurricular, not too different from debate, that sees the team working together, representing their school, and debating about international topics at conferences. In the past, UMaine has not truly been represented at these conferences, but at McMun in Montreal last year, UMaine was able to show other schools what we can do. Our members learned and grew from the incredible opportunity that was traveling to McMun, and we would love to provide that again. We practice, debate, and discuss international topics while preparing for conferences.

Our club runs several outdoorsy trips on weekends during the school year such as hiking, backpacking, skiing, canoeing, cross country skiing, fishing, and polar plunging! Some trips are more physically demanding than others but we explain what’s expected before trip signups. The club has a ton of gear that members can rent out for free during trips or even just for their own use. We also have a cabin in Carrabassett Valley that is open anytime during the winter months for members who ski to stay at.

We are a peace and justice group on campus. We were started in response to the Viet Nam war and have continued our semesterly newsletter since the 1970’s. We host discussion groups, book groups, and events around the subjects of peace and justice activism by nonviolent means. Our organization offers a space for growth, academic improvement, and community among fellow STEM students of color. Being in a predominately white school, it’s tough enough finding students who share your culture/features. It’s an even greater challenge finding students who both look like you, and who are interested in the STEM fields. Our group is geared towards finding those few students around campus to connect them with one another. Most of us have all become close friends who game together, talk about STEM news, and hang out outside of the club.

NSSLHA stands for National Student Speech, Language, Hearing Association. NSSLHA is a national club for Communication Sciences and Disorders students. The purpose of the organization is to bring CSD students together and give them the tools they need to achieve success in the field. The UMaine NSSLHA chapter meets every other week. During these meetings we talk about different service and academic opportunities. We often volunteer with Maine Hands and Voices, an organization that supports the families of deaf and hard of hearing children. This semester we are also working on providing more academic support for those in the major. NSSLHA offers a community where CSD students who are passionate about the field can gather and form a community.

Our purpose is to offer University of Maine nursing students an international experience that focuses on global health. Nursing students who are interested in enhancing their understanding of global health issues as well as providing humanitarian health care related assistance to an underserved population, will have the opportunity to participate in an international experience. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is an organization made up of residential students. We are the voice for students living on campus and we help determine where your hard earned money goes. We are funded by Auxiliary Services, and some of our projects have included purchasing pool tables, ping pong tables, and televisions in the lobbies as well as games and Wii’s for the front desks. We also sponsor the FYE t-shirts given to every first year student during opening weekend and we sponsor many activities that occur both in the residence halls and around campus.

The Rock Climbing Club of the University of Maine serves to strengthen the climbing community among all students, staff, and locals who share a love for climbing and bouldering alike. The purpose of this organization is to provide members with a resource for information regarding the sport of climbing, access to Maine’s plentiful outdoor climbing areas, and promote the personal health and safety of individuals participating in a physically demanding sport. Furthermore, the club will promote events sponsored by Maine Bound Adventure Center as well as continuously working to improve the experience for anyone who enjoys this great on-campus resource.

Sociology club has been a place for students with an interest in sociology to gather, build community with like minded peers, and discuss all things sociology related! In the future, we would like for the sociology club to also be a group through which students can volunteer in the community, do homework and study together (upperclassmen can help with courses they have already taken!), prepare for next steps in their schooling or careers, and hear from professors about their experiences and research. Further, we want to make sociology fun and accessible, so we have plans for game nights (in the past we have played “cards against sociology”), watching horror movies to discuss the embedded sociological themes, and taking club run field trips. Further, we already have plans for this semester that include events where we will hear from guest speakers about relevant and contemporary topics.

This club is only open to students who have taken a certain number of credits of AVS 397. We are a group of students with a passion for horses and their wellbeing. We learn more about the equine industry and horse care and are also responsible for riding/exercising the horses. We participate in and host events with the rest of the Witter Farm clubs/groups.

Storied fosters a supportive environment for explorations of writing and literature, both classic and modern. Our meetings are dedicated to the appreciation of various forms of literature, including readings and experimentation with interpretation and style. We respond to weekly selections from a variety of genres, styles, periods, and forms in order to better establish a foothold in the contemporary postmodern period; these responses often take the form of interpretive adaptations and exploration through creation. We also offer monthly open mics for the sharing of new work and appreciation of canonical writers.

SHR is an organization dedicated to introducing the pillars of harm reduction to this community. Harm reduction is primarily associated with drug use, but can be applied to more things. Over the period of official recognization, SHR has turned its focus to drug use and Maine Day. The campus community is not immune to the social phenomenon of drug use: people will use drugs but SHR will allow the resources to provide harm reduction. Harm reduction can be applied to many things: CPR, seatbelts, and anything that minimizes long-term damage to a human!

We would like to present to the UMaine population the Tea Appreciation Society. Tea has been around for thousands of years and is enjoyed in a variety of ways by many different cultures. The Eastern style of brewing is known as Gong Fu, which means “making tea with skill.” Tea is as much about the drink itself as it is the experience and community associated with it. As tea was popularized in the Western world, the purpose of tea was warped to fit the desires of the consumers with to-go cups of tea lattes, bottled ice teas, and tea bags. The experience has been disconnected from the tea, but in the UMaine Tea Appreciation Society we aim to bring back that sense of community. At our meeting, we plan to make tea Gong Fu and bring into focus the rich history of the various types of tea in a relaxed and social setting. To keep the club a safe space for everyone involved, tea will be served individually and social distancing practices will be observed, but being able to meet in-person would allow us to share our knowledge and appreciate for the craft over cups of tea. We would love to provide an opportunity to allow people to experience Gong Fu, making tea with skill.

The Town-Gown Club would be the UMaine campus’s only club that is dedicated to fostering positive relations between the UMaine campus and the town of Orono that it sits on. We will accomplish this goal by using our club to increase student involvement in Orono. Every year, we will utilize the power of students to implement service projects and sustainable programs in Orono. We will also perform outreach to the student body to educate them on the importance of local government and how it affects them. In doing so, we will work to set new records for the amount of students that vote and participate in local elections.

UMaine Club Track is a sports club oriented towards activities related to track and field such as long distance running, sprinting, middle-distance, and some throwing events. The club atmosphere maintains a comfortable balance between intensity and lightheartedness. The club participates in a number of community service activities as well as fundraisers. We also generally have some representation of club members at events such as the Millinocket Half Marathon and the Healthy High 5k/10k.

The UMaine Trap and Skeet Club is a welcoming environment for students to practice shotgun shooting sports. We practice weekly at the Hermon Skeet Club, in Hermon, and participate in several competitions throughout the year. We encourage all interested students of any skill level to join us. Clay shooting is a sport everyone can enjoy regardless of their background.
