The Institut d’été is now scheduled to take place in Quebec City this summer from June 23 to June 28, 2024.  Please mark your calendar!  L’Institut d’été se déroule en français et offre une immersion complète en français.

Participants provide their own transportation to/from Quebec City, with arrival no later than 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 23.  The program will conclude by noon on Friday, June 28.

Eligibility: To be eligible to enter Canada, participants must qualify as fully vaccinated against covid-19.Participants must have a valid passport and assume full responsibility for ensuring entry requirements into Canada are met. Participation will require compliance with all local, provincial, national and international health and safety requirements. Usage of face coverings throughout the program is expected in indoor learning spaces at this time.

Institute Costs: the USD $850 registration fee is due by May 6, 2024.  Registration payment by this deadline is required to finalize your placement.

2024 Summer Institute Description

Open Invitation for U.S. Teachers of French (pre-K to grade 12 plus community college and university levels).  Educators of disciplines other than French may also apply pending their French language ability and verification of teaching responsibilities related to Québec/Canadian content.  French language ability required for participation is intermediate level in accordance with ACTFL guidelines.

French Immersion: Institut d’été will be conducted en français.  Montréal is an exciting bilingual environment within the province of Québec, where the sole official language is French.

Program Description:  Montréal, métropole francophone d’Amérique  offers French language professional development in an immersion setting for six days in Montréal, Québec, Canada, one of the largest French speaking cities in the world. .Participants will explore the diversity of this unique North American cosmopolitan metropolitan area of more than 4 million people.  

Program content is designed to support teachers of French seeking to incorporate Québec/Canadian culture and North American French content into their classrooms.  Select curriculum materials and teaching resources will be provided. 

Sessions will address select Québec topics relating to language, culture (literature, film, music, art), history, geography, and politics.  Institut d’été will offer a robust learning opportunity through first-hand experiences including -expanding vocabulary and strengthening communication skills briefings by academic and cultural experts educational tours of the city, site visits to cultural institutions, and curriculum planning and discussion

Program Director:  Dr. Frédéric Rondeau, Director of the Canadian-American Center, and Associate Professor of French, University of Maine, is a Montréal native who received his Ph.D. from McGill University.  His research specialization includes 20th Century Québec Literature and Culture; Counter-Culture (transnational perspective); Francophone Literature of North America.

Transportation:  Participants are responsible to provide their own transportation to and from Quebec City, with arrival to be scheduled no later than 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 23, 2024.  The program will officially conclude at noon Friday, June 28, 2024.  (Transportation is provided for program activities scheduled throughout Institut.d’été.)

Organizers: Institut d’été pour les enseignant(e)s de francais is organized by the Northeast National Resource Center on Canada – a consortium including the Canadian-American Center, University of Maine and the Center for the Study of Canada / Institute on Québec Studies, State University of New York (SUNY) College at Plattsburgh.  The Northeast National Resource Center on Canada has offered professional development to American teachers in Canadian and Québec Studies since the 1980s, and has provided training to thousands of educators who teach about Québec and Canada.  Institut d’été is produced with support from the United States Department of Education, International and Foreign Language Education, Title VI program.
