International Insurance Information

UMaine requires all study abroad students to have international medical and accident insurance coverage during the entire length of your education abroad program period.

U.S. medical insurance is generally not accepted outside the United States, nor do the Social Security Medicare and Medicaid programs provide coverage for hospital or medical costs outside the United States.

Direct Exchange Programs

Students will receive coverage through the “UMaine System AIG Travel Guard insurance.”

Students are automatically put under the policy once they fill out, and submit, their education abroad application form.

Recommended Providers

Recommended providers are USAC, AIP, CIEE, CIS Abroad, etc.

Each provider has their own insurance plan and requires students to register through them for the insurance. They cost is part of the total program fee.

For any other type of program with a different provider not affiliated with UMaine, please discuss with the Education Abroad Advisor.
