Happy Spring, Black Bears!

Welcome back from Spring Break! It’s hard to believe we’re already in the final stretch of the academic year. As campus bursts back to life with warmer weather and renewed energy, we’re excited for all that’s ahead—some major milestones, celebrations, and opportunities to finish strong together.

Here’s what’s happening with your Student Government and what to keep on your radar this Spring:

Executive Elections & Inauguration
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 UMSG Executive Elections! We’re excited to announce that Keegan Tripp has been re-elected as President, and Cynthia Shelmerdine has been elected as Vice President of the University of Maine Student Government. We’re enthusiastic about the work this new administration will do on your behalf.

To celebrate the incoming executives and the leadership of the past year, we invite you to the UMSG Inauguration Ceremony at the Buchanan Alumni House on April 24th. More details to come through our Instagram/Newsletter—stay tuned!

Student Activity Fee Referendum Results
During the Spring Election, students also had the opportunity to vote on a proposed increase to the Student Activity Fee. We’re pleased to share that the proposal passed with 72% of the vote (460 in favor, 170 against).

This increase will help ensure continued funding for student organizations, events, and initiatives across campus. Thank you for making your voice heard and participating in this important decision!

The Maine Event Concert
Get ready—Ricky Montgomery is coming to UMaine! Best known for viral hits like Line Without a Hook and Mr. Loverman, Ricky blends nostalgic indie-pop with heartfelt storytelling. Opening for him will be Maine’s own Oshima Brothers, bringing their signature harmonies and captivating stage presence.

The concert will take place Thursday, April 11th from 8:00–11:00 PM in the Collins Center for the Arts. Undergraduate students can reserve free tickets now through Campus Groups!

Celebrating Student Leadership
This spring, we’re proud to celebrate the many students who, through their dedication, make UMaine better. The Undergraduate Student Leadership Awards recognize students who go above and beyond to strengthen our campus community through service, leadership, and involvement.

As part of this celebration, UMSG will present two special awards:
Senator of the Year – recognizing an outstanding member of the General Student Senate.
UMSG Emerging Leader Award – honoring a rising student leader making a big impact.

Keep an eye out for announcements about this year’s award recipients and how you can attend the celebration!
