Columbus SMART Students win top awards at Region V Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair

Tori Savors, A’miyah Porter and Wynter Brooks of Columbus High School with top awards for their project “Macroinverterbrates – Healthy or Contaminated in Magby Creek”

At the Region V Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair in February 2018, SMART students Tori Savors, A’miyah Porter and Wynter Brooks’s project, “Macroinverterbrates – Healthy or Contaminated in Magby Creek” won 1st place in Earth and Environmental Science. This project also won 3 special awards: Association for Women in Geosciences, the Justice Manning Award for Environmental Excellence and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize Award of Excellence.  SMART students David Alvarez and Hunter Brooks won two special awards: the American Meteorological Society Award and the NASA Earth System Science Award for their project, “Weather and Water Quality.” Great work, Mississippi! Special thanks to teacher Deb Pounders for her outstanding mentoring of these students.
