General Information on Diversity at the University of Maine

Office of International Programs
Supports international education on campus. Services include: recruitment and admission of undergraduate and transfer international students, establishing and coordinating exchange programs and study abroad opportunities, the University’s Exchange Visitor Program, immigration processing and advising, and promoting international awareness with academic departments, sponsored activities, seminars and programs.

Religious Affairs
Provides students with a connection to the religious community.

ALANA – Office of Multicultural Programs
Provides students of color with support services and programs, which include personal advising, student advocacy, personal counseling, peer mentoring program, and internship/scholarship information.

Franco-American Centre
Provides education to the University community regarding Franco-American culture.

Wabanaki Center
Provides Native American students with support, educational resources, and academic and career counseling.

President’s Council on Women
Advises the President as to policies and strategies to achieve change and be a voice for women.

Women’s Resource Center
Provides female students with support and helps promote and maintain a positive climate for women at the University.

Canadian American Center
A National resource center on Canada at the University of Maine.

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Services – Rainbow Resource Center
Provides GLBT students with support and advocacy on campus. The Rainbow Resource Center offers a library of books and films available to the campus community. The GLBT Allies Council and the Safe Zone Project are both a part of GLBT Services.

Center for Community Inclusion & Disability Studies
Promotes the production and dissemination of research and education surrounding disability support services. Strives to enhance the capacity of the University to offer services that reflect best practices for inclusion.

Disability Support Services
Provides educational access for students with disabilities. Some of the services include advising, special orientation to campus, readers, tape recorders, note takers, ordering taped texts, classroom relocation, priority registration, mediation and advisement on disability issues, classroom accommodations, as well as personal, educational, and vocational counseling.

Peace Studies
Works towards providing education and supporting cultures of peace state, nation, and worldwide.

Franco-American Studies
An interdisciplinary program within the University in which students explore French cultures of the United States.

Women in the Curriculum – Women’s Studies
Helps to provide a balanced curriculum that considers the unique perspectives, values, and needs of both men and women. As a part of this, the Women in Curriculum program offers a lunch series during which individuals discuss women’s studies issues.
