Remembering Linda Zillman — Sept. 5, 2025
Dear University of Maine and University of Maine at Machias communities,
Today, we pause to remember and honor the life of Linda Zillman, whose passing yesterday afternoon is a profound loss for the University of Maine and for our state.
Together with her husband, Don, Linda was a transformative supporter of public higher education and the arts in Maine. Their vision and generosity have left a lasting imprint on our university and on the cultural and academic vitality of the state.
At UMaine, Linda and Don made possible the growth and expansion of what is now the Zillman Art Museum in downtown Bangor, creating a vibrant and accessible space where generations of Mainers and visitors can experience contemporary art. Linda was a frequent presence at the museum, engaging with students, faculty, and guests and sharing her belief in the power of the arts to enrich lives.
The Zillmans made other lasting contributions across the University of Maine System and state. For example, at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the Zillmans established the Zillman Family Professorship and provided the first gift for the Zillman Family Greenhouse, and in 2022, were awarded honorary doctorates. Their philanthropy also supported student scholarships, faculty research, and community engagement across the System, expanding opportunities that strengthen people and programs statewide.
Linda will be remembered for her generosity, grace, and genuine care for others. She found joy in seeing students and faculty thrive and was deeply engaged in the public universities and other causes she championed.
A true friend to UMaine, her belief in education and culture helped shape our university. During this difficult time, our thoughts are with those who were close to Linda, in our community and beyond.
Sincerely,
Joan Ferrini-Mundy
President
