Dr. Hans Weisz 1906-1975
Dr. Hans Weisz, for whom the Weisz Room in the Maples is named, was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1906. Weisz earned both a medical degree and a PhD in mathematics. In 1938, he was a lecturer at the University of Vienna and private medical practice when the Nazis invaded. As a Jewish intellectual, he fled to London and eventually the United States. After briefly practicing medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Weisz came to Maine and settled into rural medical practice until 1966, when he moved to the then-new Cutler Health Center on the UMaine campus. Around that same time, he returned to teaching, offering a philosophy seminar on the brain and computers until he died in 1975.
