Applied Lessons – Percussion – BA in Jazz Studies: Drum Set with Optional Jazz Vibes curriculum

Required for entrance into program:

  • Basic proficiency for comping and fills in the following styles:
    • Swing/bop
    • Funk
    • Latin

Eight credits of applied lessons will develop:

  • Technical mastery of:
    • Independence
    • Snare drum
    • Bass drum and hi-hat
    • 4-way coordination
    • Brushes
  • Chart interpretation
  • Ability to appropriately interpret styles and sub-styles, such as:
    • Swing
      • Light
      • Heavy
      • Up
      • Brushes
      • Shuffle
      • Waltz
      • Odd meters
    • Rock
      • Funk
      • R&B/Hip-hop
    • Latin
      • Samba
      • Mambo
      • Bossa nova
      • Calypso
      • Soca
      • Merengue
      • Songo
      • Nañigo
      • Salsa

Optional Jazz Vibes:

  • Two and four-mallet technique
  • Pedaling and stick dampening techniques
  • Comping and voicing
  • Jazz improvisation

The Final Exam at the conclusion of the eighth credit of applied lessons will consist of performance with an appropriate ensemble/combo demonstrating selected styles and techniques from the above lists.
