What to Wear
Types of Fabric to Wear for Outdoor Activity
There are a multitude of fabric types to wear outdoors depending on the climate conditions and the terrain. Some of the most common are fleece, wool, polypropylene, Gore Tex, and polyester. For more information on shopping for outdoor clothing, see the Dress For Less page.

Fleece, made partially from polyester, is an insulating material that tends to be a mid-layer when dressing for the outdoors. Fleece clothing is tightly woven to prevent the amount of heat that can be lost through radiation and convention. Examples include jackets, pullovers, hats, gloves, neck warmers, and ear warmers.

Wool is a material that works well as an absorbent insulator. This material works at its best when it is touching skin due to its water absorbing properties being able to insulate while holding sweat. Merino wool is moisture wicking, breathable and insulating and is highly recommended. Examples include socks, hats, sweaters, long sleeves, and long underwear.

Polypropylene is a great material because it is lightweight and quick drying. It can be a great insulator or base layer and can range from from thick to thin. This synthetic material stretches and has a hard time losing its shape. Examples include leggings, shirts, insulated turtlenecks, thin layer gloves.

Polyester is a synthetic, lightweight, and durable material. It is highly wicking and is a thin base layer. Polyester is fast drying and is typically used when doing intense exercise. Examples include shirts, shorts, hats, gloves, underwear, and neck warmers.

Gore Tex is a waterproof, highly durable, wind proof material that tends to be used as an outer layer. This tough layer can be crucial for warmth in climates where heat loss can be rapid. Examples include insulated jackets, windbreakers and snow gloves.
