BBC interviews McGill on repercussions of a 1990s biosphere experiment

BBC interviewed Brian McGill, professor of ecological modeling at the University of Maine, on the Biosphere 2 experiment. Conducted in the 1990s, a small team tried to survive in a hermetically sealed space containing replicas of Earth’s ecosystems. McGill suggested the biosphere’s pollinators may have died off because the glass enclosure blocked ultraviolet light, which the insects needed to find flowers. “Bees in particular see in the UV spectrum,” he said.
