UMaine launches sport communication minor
For students aspiring to become sports reporters, content creators or marketers, the University of Maine Department of Communication and Journalism has launched a new sport communication minor.
The minor is intended to provide students with the critical understanding of and experience in content creation for the sports industry, delving into various aspects of media, marketing and more. The sport communication minor will also give students the opportunity to learn how the principles of communication and journalism apply to sports-related events, topics and people.
The program will familiarize students with the skills and tools needed to produce sports-related content for a variety of media, including print, broadcast and digital. Courses will also teach students how to function as effective communicators on behalf of sport organizations.
A key component of the minor is helping students develop a critical understanding of the role sports play in culture. That can involve social issues such as promotion of health and well-being, equity and equality, as well as a deeper grasp of the cultural impact — popular and otherwise — of sports media.
