UPDATE: Starbucks to open in the Class of 1944 Bear’s Den on Sept. 10

ORONO — University of Maine Dining has announced that a fully licensed Starbucks venue will open Sept. 9 in the Class of 1944 Bear’s Den, located on the second floor of the Memorial Union.
The new Starbucks will offer a full menu of drinks and treats, including the seasonal offerings that Starbucks is famous for.
The Bear’s Den Cafe & Pub has remained closed since spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past year, UMaine Dining has actively sought feedback from students, alumni and other campus community members through listening sessions, surveys and open forums. A strong preference emerged for bringing a nationally recognized coffee shop to campus, with Starbucks ultimately selected by a student vote.
“In their everyday lives, community members are used to the convenience of well-established brands that offer loyalty programs, expanding menus, great technology and, of course, delicious handcrafted coffee,” said Tadd Stone, UMaine Dining regional manager. “Our community wants access to a venue close to where they spend the majority of their days, be it in classes, working or participating in the wide range of athletics, arts and activities UMaine has to offer.”
UMaine Dining will maintain the historical significance of the Class of 1944 Bear’s Den, incorporating class memorabilia into the décor of the new Starbucks location.
For those seeking convenience, three 15-minute parking spots will be available outside the Memorial Union on China Road for grab-and-go orders. These spots will be monitored by Parking & Transportation Services. Additional parking options can be found in nearby lots, including mobile-pay spaces in the Smith Lot near the Memorial Union.
