Weinauer featured in ‘Maine Calling’ celebrating UMaine alumnus Lown
University of Maine Honors College Dean Ellen Weinauer, was featured in a “Maine Calling” episode from Maine Public celebrating the achievements and life of UMaine alumnus Bernard Lown. The U.S. Mint released a $1 coin for the state of Maine in May in honor of Lown, who invented the direct current defibrillator and won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work against nuclear arms during the Cold War. Lown migrated to Lewiston, Maine from Lithuania as a teenager and proceeded to graduate from the UMaine Honors Program, now the Honors College, in 1942 before dedicating his life to serving humanity through science and advocacy.
