CCIDS profiles Step Up Program participant

The University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (CCIDS) recently posted a story on its website, “A college exploration conversation with Jake and Christy.” The article features Jake, a high school junior on the autism spectrum who is exploring his college options and attended a UMaine campus tour with his mother, Christy, in late November.

Last July, Jake participated in the Step Up Program, a month-long learning experience for high school juniors or seniors with an autism spectrum diagnosis who are interested in attending college and are clients of the Maine Department of Labor’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR). The program is a collaboration among UMaine’s Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies, the College of Education and Human Development, Student Accessibility Services and the Maine Department of Labor DVR.
