UMaine surveying students awarded national scholarships
Five University of Maine students have received scholarships of $2,000 each from the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Foundation, a national professional organization that supports college education in geospatial sciences.
NSPS awarded 18 scholarships nationwide in 2021, including four to UMaine students in the online Bachelor of Science in Surveying Engineering Technology program and one to a UMaine student enrolled in the on-campus program.
Craig D’Andrea of Stamford, Connecticut, received an NSPS award; Zach Robinson of San Francisco, and Andrew Gustafson of Middletown, Rhode Island, received Nettie Dracup Memorial Scholarships; Jennifer Tuomala of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, received the Slovoj (Dr. Ing Desider E.) Scholarship; and Gideon Wheeler of Bowdoin, Maine, received the Lowell H. and Dorothy Loving Undergraduate Scholarship.
The NSPS Foundation’s and American Association for Geodetic Surveying’s scholarship committees offer awards annually from scholarship funds supported by companies, professional organizations and individuals. Scholarship criteria for students include a strong academic record, letters of recommendation, financial need, future goals and contributions to schools, community and the surveying profession.
“Across our accredited bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and undergraduate and graduate certificates, the surveying engineering technology program at the University of Maine has students from 40 states and four countries,” says professor Raymond Hintz, the program coordinator. “National scholarships in surveying are extremely competitive in nature and we are proud that the NSPS Foundation recognizes the outstanding caliber of our students.”
