UMaine announces 2021 Winter Carnival schedule

The University of Maine Center for Student Involvement has announced the schedule for Winter Carnival 2021, which is set for Feb. 16–20. 

Designed with students in mind, activities include a campuswide bear hunt, trivia night, a game of Kahoot with President Joan Ferrini-Mundy and the deans, and casino night, in addition to the traditional outdoor events such as the Winter Olympics, sledding and a bonfire. The highlight for this year features an ice sculpture on MLK Plaza.

Friend groups and organizations are encouraged to register as teams to be eligible for prizes awarded based on points earned at the week-long events.

The full schedule includes: 

Tuesday, Feb. 16: 

  • Bear Hunt, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., campuswide
    One hundred miniature bears will be hidden around campus for students to find. 
  • Surprise Giveaway, noon, on the Mall in front of Fogler Library
    A giveaway to the first 100 students sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement and Dining Services. 
  • Warm and Fuzzies Pickup, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Memorial Union Information Booth
    Supplies needed to make fleece blankets or to crochet blanket squares will be available for free; completed items will be donated to Project Linus.  
  • What’s Love Got to Do With It? 6 p.m., Memorial Union North Pod
    A spin-off of the Newlywed Game, this event will test friends and romantic partners’ knowledge of each other to highlight positive qualities. 
  • Sledding, noon–2 p.m., on the hill near Beta House
    Sleds will be available with points earned for speed and style. 

Wednesday, Feb. 17:

  • Ice Sculpture Demonstration, noon, MLK Plaza
    Watch SubZero Ice Carvings transform a 600-pound block of ice into a masterpiece. 
  • Class of ’21 Trivia Night, 7 p.m., via Zoom
    Test your trivia knowledge with the Senior Class Council to earn cash prizes. 

Thursday, Feb. 18:

  • Warm and Fuzzies Pickup, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., Memorial Union Information Booth
  • Kahoot with the President, 2 p.m., via Zoom
    Compete with campus administrators to earn prizes for the most correct answers. 
  • Winter Olympics and Bonfire, 3–6 p.m., on the Mall in front of Fogler Library
    Grand UMaine Winter Olympics events will test agility, speed, accuracy, endurance and strength. Teams can earn points toward a prize of $250 in student organization funds.
  • Casino Night, 8–10 p.m., Memorial Union North Pod
    The Campus Activities Board will host this event, which includes prizes.

Friday, Feb. 19: 

  • Virtual Reality Escape Rooms, noon–5 p.m., Bangor Room
    Strap on a sanitized VR headset and enter a virtual escape room with three of your friends. 
  • Virtual Reality Game Night, 8–11 p.m., Bangor Room
    Use a VR headset to compete in games like Fruit Ninja and Rock Band. 

Saturday, Feb. 20: 

  • Mega Mingo, 9–11 p.m., Memorial Union North Pod
    Win big prizes and earn points for your team at this twist on the classic Bingo game.

Winter Carnival 2021 sponsors include All Maine Women, Campus Activities Board, the Division of Student Life, Maine Bound, Panhellenic Council, Senior Class Council and UMaine Student Government.
