To enhance clam populations, focus on predators, not shells

Excluding predators dramatically increases the abundance of juvenile clams; adding shells to mudflats in an effort to counteract coastal acidification does not, according to a study led by researchers at the Downeast Institute and the University of Maine at Machias. A news release about the findings, published in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, is online.
