WVII reports engineering students to host regional conference, race concrete canoes

WVII (Channel 7) reported the University of Maine’s chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting this year’s regional conference April 13–14. About 370 students are expected to participate in the conference, which will include a steel bridge building competition, networking activities and a concrete canoe racing competition in Old Town. Past canoes have weighed as little as 150 pounds and have measured as long as 18 feet, according to WVII. “Every canoe has a theme, like ours is Breaking the Sound ‘Bearier’ because we’re the Maine Black Bears,” said Erin Brewer, president of UMaine ASCE.
