Politico cites Socolow’s research in article on op-ed pages

Research conducted by Michael Socolow, an associate professor of communication and journalism at the University of Maine, was cited in the Politico article, “The New York Times op-ed page is not your safe space.” The article cites Socolow’s 2010 article about the history of the NYT op-ed page, “A Profitable Public Sphere: The Creation of the New York Times Op-Ed Page.” The author wrote that Socolow’s “deeply researched piece,” shows that from the time its top editors started thinking about adding an op-ed section in the early 1960s, the idea was to use outrageous views to trigger reactions from readers. Socolow’s piece also was cited in the Splinter article, “Who is The New York Times’ woeful opinion section even for?”
