Neuroscientist Comments in Article on Drug-Addicted Newborns
Marie Hayes, a UMaine professor of psychology, was interviewed for a Kennebec Journal report on babies who are born addicted to prescription painkillers. Although the long-term physical effects on newborns are not known, Hayes said there is cause for concern about the effects of opiate exposure before birth and the withdrawal process.
