The government of Cyprus has selected UMaine sociology professor, researcher and author Kyriacos Markides to represent it at a four-day authors’ festival from April 14-17, sponsored by Hungary, the current head nation of the European Union. Each member nation of the EU was asked to nominate and send to the festival one of its authors whose books have been published in Hungarian. The festival will feature various presentations by the authors. Hungary and Cyprus will pay for his travel and lodging expenses. For the last 20 years, Markides has been exploring the lives and teachings of Christian mystics, healers, and miracle workers and monastics around the world. He has written six acclaimed books on the subject, which are published in English and in eight other languages.
