UMaine Math Students in International Competition

University of Maine math students Joshua Scripture, Ellen Moriarty and Eric Sawyer represented the university in the 71st Putnam Competition, held in December 2010.  Described by UMaine math professor David Bradley as being “widely known as the world’s toughest math contest,” the event featured 546 institutions and nearly 4,300 students from across North America.  Scripture excelled in the competition, ranking in the top 28 percent among all participants.  Ali Ozluk of the UMaine math faculty recruited team members, coached the team and served as the competition’s local supervisor.
