Pen Bay Pilot covers expansion of Wabanaki ambassador program to UMM
The Penobscot Bay Pilot featured a University of Maine news release detailing the expansion of the Wabanaki Youth Science (WaYS) program to the University of Maine Machias campus. The initiative, New Beginnings for Tribal Students (NBTS), will also establish a mentorship program called WaYS Ambassadors, in which advanced Native American graduate and undergraduate students will guide peers at the Machias and Orono campuses through research projects and professional development activities. Darren Ranco, associate professor of anthropology and chair of Native American programs at UMaine, will lead the project which seeks to increase the enrollment of Native American students and to enhance their graduation rates at both campuses.
