TV 7 interviews Freeman on the history of slavery in the U.S.

WFVX (FOX 22/ABC 7 in Bangor) interviewed Mary Freeman, assistant professor of New England history, on the history of how slavery ended in the U.S. and the meaning of Juneteenth. “We often think about the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 as this big turning point where emancipation is taking hold,” said Freeman. “But it shows you that two years later, there were still people in slavery in the U.S. — and people in slavery who didn’t know about the fact that emancipation was on the table.”
