Undergraduates Delve Deeply into Modern-Day Food Topics in Intensive Research Course
A group of UMaine Honors College students have undertaken an intensive summer session in an area of study coming alive with new focus: food and food-related topics.
“Maine is the heaviest state in the Northeast. If you look at the way the topic is framed in the news, it’s an individual problem. Blame is placed on people,” said Alan Bennett, a senior in the School of Communication and Journalism, who is conducting an analysis of obesity coverage in Maine print media.
“One of my questions is: what responsibility does journalism have to our citizens? Are we actually harming citizens?”
Bennett is one of five new undergraduate fellows chosen by Honors College faculty to participate in the Sustainable Food Systems Research Collaborative (SFSRC), an innovative, interdisciplinary project, which brings together students, faculty and the community to examine food systems from production to access and consumption.
