Degree Program: M.S. in Ecology and Environmental Science

What problem/s are you working to solve?
I am working with Maine Sea Grant to improve the Aquaculture in Shared Waters training program. I interview women who have taken the course to understand barriers and opportunities within the course, and within the aquaculture industry broadly.
What progress are you making toward solutions?
We hope to provide recommendations to Aquaculture in Shared Waters, as well as other training programs, on changes that can be made to improve diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. We are heartened by the response we have received from members of Maine’s aquaculture industry to our work, as well as the reception we received at the recent Women of the Water conference in Florida.
How could your findings contribute to a sustainable future in Maine and beyond?
Advancements in fisheries and aquaculture are not sustainable or equitable if they primarily serve men. Maine’s working waterfront has traditionally been a male-dominated space. We hope to be a small part in making the working waterfront a safe place for all people, including women and gender minorities. Additionally, we hope that our work can improve aquaculture training programs for women within the region and across the country, thereby making the aquaculture industry a leader in economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
Why did you get involved with the Mitchell Center Sustainability Graduate Fellowship Program?
I got involved with the Mitchell Center Sustainability Graduate Fellowship Program because I was excited by the opportunity to engage with other like-minded, early career scientists and changemakers. I am the only student in my lab, so the ability to connect with other graduate students in a cohort was exciting for me.
What sustains you?
I am sustained by doing work that is meaningful and impactful to human and natural communities. I am also sustained by good food, time in nature, and knitting with natural fibers.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I hope to be conducting research with real-world, positive impacts on people and nature.
What’s your ultimate Maine experience?
I recently hiked Katahdin, which was a big Maine bucket list moment for me! I would love to get on a lobstering boat however – that feels like the quintessential Maine experience. And I want to see a moose!
