Schattman discusses McCain Foods’ solar initiative

solar panels in field with sky and cloudsIn a recent article, Rachel Schattman, a University of Maine assistant professor of sustainable agriculture and Mitchell Center Faculty Fellow, spoke with Centralmaine.com about McCain Foods’ plan to power 50% of its Easton, Maine potato processing plant with five community solar gardens. The effort is part of an overall attempt to completely power all of its plants with renewable energy by 2030.

“One of the biggest impacts that farms have (on climate change) is energy consumption. … Research shows us that we get the most bang for our buck by just not using as much energy and by really investing in energy efficiency and moving away from fossil fuels,” Schattman said.
