John Diamond

Role: As Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO), John Diamond is primarily responsible for advancing UMaine’s goals and priorities through the full range of stakeholder communications. Diamond oversees the Division of Marketing and Communications and, as a member of President Joan Ferrini-Mundy’s cabinet, he advises on institutional matters related to the university’s many constituencies.

Bio: Diamond was named interim CMCO in August 2024. A Bangor native and Black Bear alumnus, he had a 33-year career in higher education before retiring (he thought!) in 2022. His career included 20 years at UMaine: three years as an assistant professor of journalism and mass communication; ten years as the university’s CMCO (when the position was known by a different title); and seven years as president and CEO of the University of Maine Alumni Association.

Diamond’s career also included CMCO positions at the University of Maine System, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Wisconsin System.

In addition to his higher ed career, Diamond served eight years in the Maine State Legislature, including his last four years as House Majority Leader. His passions are family time, baseball, music, books, and cats and dogs.
