Logos & Usage

University of Maine logos are associated with the quality of UMaine programs, products, and services and distinguish its programs from other universities. These marks are for official use only and they cannot be altered or changed in any way without expressed written permission from the Division of Marketing and Communications.

Overview

All university trademarks are the exclusive property of the university. Use of these names and images for any retail or commercial purpose, for endorsements, promotions and the like requires the written, official permission of the university. All products bearing University of Maine marks and distributed for resale or used for other promotional purposes are subject to the licensing policies of the university.

Crest Logos

When using the full crest and Maine crest logos, note:

  • The University of Maine’s full crest logo is the primary institutional logo and must be prominent and dominant.
  • The three inside sails on the logo must always be light, surrounded by the darker box. The logo cannot be reversed, making the sails dark.
  • The full crest logo and the Maine crest logos are registered marks and are not allowed to be incorporated into another logo; they may not overlap other graphics; they can’t be deconstructed with pieces used in other graphics and they can’t be contained within an outlined shape like putting the logo inside a circle or shield. See logo guidelines for more information.
  • The crest logo is registered and merchandise using it must include the ® symbol and must be sold through licensed vendors or with permission from the Division of Marketing and Communications.
  • Print publications and in-house materials do not need the ® symbol.

Athletics Logos

The Maine bear logo can stand alone. The bear head logo should be used along with Maine or the full crest logo someplace on the product, but not overlapping the artwork. The bear logo is registered and merchandise using it must be used with the ® symbol.

This is the only bear used to represent the University of Maine.

The Maine bear logo and the bear head logo are not allowed to be incorporated into another logo; they may not overlap other graphics; they can’t be deconstructed with pieces used in other graphics and they can’t be contained within an outlined shape like putting the logo inside a circle or shield.

Visit the logo guidelines page to see common logo mistakes.

  • School spirit entails use of the bear logo specifically meant to represent the competitive or emotional connection felt for the Maine Black Bears.
  • In circumstances that require a sense of school spirit and the identification of the University of Maine, the bear logo can be used in conjunction with the Maine crest logo.
  • Any instance related to the university’s overarching teaching, research and service mission that does not involve school spirit as defined above (e.g., academic events, research posters, name badges, commencement robes, etc.) requires the use of the UMaine crest logo as the primary identifier and not the bear logo.

Department Logos

University of Maine departments, programs, institutes and other units have options for unit identity logos, primary and reversed. Your departmental logo will be created using a template to ensure consistency in font, placement, size and spacing. This presentation gives a clear visual representation of all University of Maine departments under the institutional brand.

There is no charge for the creation of your department logo files. You will be given the primary version with dark lettering to use on light backgrounds and a reversed full color version and all white version for use on dark.

Graphic Marks

Some units may need an identity to represent a particular area of focus or an initiative.

The graphic may not be combined with an institutional logo or use pieces of the institutional logo within the graphic design.

  • The graphic may not contain “University of Maine” text.
  • The graphic is a secondary mark and must be used along with a primary logo following institutional branding guides.

Graphic marks must be designed or approved by Marketing and Communications.
