Campaign Language

Guided by our brand strategy, this campaign brings to the forefront our commitment to exploration, ingenuity and collaboration in service of this blue planet.

The Heartbeat of Blue Horizons

In a world that values individualism, UMaine chooses collaboration. Our North Star has never been rooted in individual pursuits. We are tethered to this blue planet, to steward our natural resources and preserve the wonders of Maine and beyond.

As the old saying goes, “None of us is as smart as all of us.”

We take our journey together. We chart a course for the common good, for the betterment of our communities. Bright minds, wild ideas, and passionate hearts come together in a beautiful collision of optimism that results in real and sustainable change.

Blue Horizons reflects all this: Our determination to protect our planet by doing good work together that enables us to achieve actionable solutions.

How to Write About Blue Horizons

Our Wording Should Communicate Purpose

We are on journeys that do have destinations; we are not pursuing unreachable goals. Through evergreen education, mentorship and collaboration, our students and faculty are reaching new heights, expanding their influence, and making the world a better place.

Blue is the New Green

Earth is the blue planet and UMaine seeks to protect our blue and green spaces. By articulating our environmental stewardship with the color blue, a color that’s been associated with UMaine for decades, we find a new way to communicate a timeless truth about UMaine: We’ve been a leading voice in climate research for more than half a century. We were laser-focused on climate change long before it was en vogue, and that’s because we’re not governed by trends.

At UMaine, stewardship is something that’s taught in the curriculum and something that’s modeled by our community. There is more water than land on our blue planet. Oceans cover three-quarters of our world and bleed together into one giant body of water. Through extensive and ongoing research into environmental impact, we lead the way in sustaining the world — the forests, the farmland, the waterways — that sustains us.

By including the word “horizons,” we allude to the opportunity and bright future our community shares. Our campus is filled with visionaries and leaders who conduct groundbreaking research and lead new initiatives — and we’ll do it together. The sun rises first in Maine. We lead the way with optimism and intention, and we do it together.

The earth is alive. It’s full of living and breathing organisms and ecosystems that give life to every person in this world. Our planet sustains us, and our highest calling at UMaine is stewarding it.
