The UMaine-led innovation team is working directly with area hospitals to understand their needs and requirements as guidelines for masks often differ from hospital to hospital. UMaine has the research expertise and testing capacity to help validate alternative designs and assist hospitals with developing mask decontamination/sterilization protocols.

If your hospital would like help with mask decontamination/sterilization protocols, please send an email to UMSC19request@maine.edu and indicate your interest in decontamination/sterilization in the subject line.

The UMaine innovation team also is working closely with Maine hospitals and manufacturers to evaluate alternative materials and designs for masks that can be locally manufactured in the quantities needed. Currently, there are no producers of certified protective face masks for hospital use in the state of Maine, though in-state manufacturers are working to develop this capacity.
