Maine Impact Week is proud to include the Marine Research and Education Open House. This will take place at the University of Maine in Orono at multiple sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
This event is free, open to the public and appropriate for all ages!

Ocean Observing in the Gulf of Maine: Buoys and Gliders
Ocean Operations Building – behind Bryand Global Science building
The UMaine Physical Oceanography group will have a tour of the Ocean Operations building where the public can learn about ocean observing in the Gulf of Maine. Both buoys and gliders will be on display along with presentations about how they are made and what data they can collect.

Maine Sea Grant will highlight their investments in research and outreach of marine science for Maine’s people. Come hear about our work on Healthy Coastal Ecosystems, Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture, Environmental Literacy and Workforce Development, Resilient Communities and Economies, and Preparing for a Changing Climate.

There will be a touch-tank available for all ages along with the ability to tour the Aquaculture Research Center. Presentations of current and future research projects related to aquaculture will be presented.

UMaine Marine Mammal Research
Hitchner Hall, Rm. 151
The UMaine Marine Mammal Research lab will showcase student research and provide opportunities for hands-on activities in molecular, acoustic, and photographic research. Come tour our genetics lab and learn about how we study marine mammals and coastal ocean health through DNA, sound, strandings, and field research.

School of Marine Sciences: Programs and Overview

We will highlight our undergraduate and graduate education programs. Posters of student research will be available for viewing, along with student-produced climate change educational videos. Several physiology laboratory activities will also be demonstrated, including a lobster heart rate and mussel heart rate lab. In addition, The UMaine Lobster Institute will have an information booth in Aubert Hall.
