UMaine HEAL Attends SBM 2025 in San Francisco!

HEAL attended the 46th annual SBM Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco, CA. All the graduate students presented their current work related to health equity and behavioral medicine! Below is some additional information about the posters presented!

Katt presented her poster related to cannabis use and suicidality, specifically aiming to provide some descriptive information about cannabis use and suicidality in young adults throughout the US, and whether state legality may play a role in this relationship. This work may inform future policy and intervention targets.

Leah presented their poster related to gender minority stress as a risk factor for cannabis and alcohol use. This project aimed to clarify the role of discrimination and victimization in cannabis and alcohol use among transgender and gender-diverse individuals in rural Maine. This research may inform tailored clinical interventions for TGNB individuals.

Sabrina presenting her poster about opioid overdose reversals in Maine. This data was accessed through Maine Access Point, a harm reduction program. Findings highlighted key differences in rural-urban overdose patterns, reflecting systemic resource deprivation and the necessity of community response systems. This research may inform harm reduction policies.

Luis presented his poster on the bidirectional interplay between cannabis use and insomnia, focusing on how subjective social standing (SSS) influences this relationship among rural college students. The study aimed to clarify short-term vulnerabilities in lower-SSS students. This work may guide future research and support strategies addressing sleep and substance use disparities in rural academic settings.

The lab attended dinner together to celebrate this achievement and their time together in San Franscisco!
