Application Process

The deadline for applications to our graduate program is January 15, 2025. The application process is competitive and applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee. The Graduate Admissions Committee utilizes a holistic admission process, weighing applicants’ unique experiences alongside traditional measures of academic achievement such as grades. Beginning with applications received for a Fall 2025 start, a virtual interview will be a required component of admissions.

The committee selects students whose academic record, written communication skills, and overall potential show the most promise for success in our field. Currently, only applicants with GPAs of 3.25 and above are eligible to apply to the Graduate Program. There is no GRE requirement for those applying for admission to the graduate program. You will need to complete a Bachelor’s degree before enrolling in the Graduate Program, but the degree does NOT need to be in CSD. Applications from all backgrounds are welcome. The Graduate Program requires completion of:
– 5 undergraduate prerequisite courses in CSD: Audiology, Language Development, Speech Anatomy and Physiology, Phonetics, and Speech Science
– a course in Neuroscience
– undergraduate coursework in biological sciences, physical sciences, behavioral sciences and statistics.
For more information on prerequisite courses, including which should be completed before the start of the graduate program, visit our FAQ page: “Applying to the Graduate Program“.

Applicants should apply through the University of Maine Graduate School online.  The process requires applicants to submit three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Students should address the following prompt in their personal statement in 300-500 words: “Applicants to our graduate program consistently have strong academic records and varied extracurricular experiences. Our department aims to find a graduate cohort of students who can uniquely and meaningfully contribute to the graduate program and the field of speech-language pathology. Share a story about yourself that exemplifies why you are a good fit for the University of Maine’s graduate program and the field of speech-language pathology.”

After initial review of applications, select applicants will an e-mail in late January inviting them to participate in a virtual interview. For this upcoming application cycle, virtual interviews will be held on Friday February 21st and will be part of a half-day information session (9 am to noon) held via zoom.

Most students will be notified of the Admissions Committee’s decision in March. The deadline to accept offers of admission is April 15th, with students who were originally waitlisted having an extended deadline.

All accepted students begin coursework the following fall. Starting in Fall 2018, students enrolling in the graduate program will be assessed a $600 program fee each semester of their graduate program.
