Jukes got her nickname through playing on the rugby team at Dartmouth College. Jukes is originally from Washington State, but she found her passion for glaciology and remote sensing during her undergraduate studies at Dartmouth in New Hampshire. Currently, in the CompuMAINE lab, she is adapting the 2D WTMM segmentation method to automatically detect glacier termini in satellite imagery. Using this method, she will track the retreat and advance of 641 glaciers in Greenland to determine their contribution to sea level rise. Jukes enjoys the interdisciplinary nature of her graduate research. While her background is in Earth science, physical geography, and remote sensing, she has enjoyed delving into programming and its biomedical applications in further depth. She now uses Python, Tcl-Tk, FIJI/ImageJ, R, and Bash/Shell scripting to analyze images and large environmental datasets. In her free time, she can be found biking on the trails in the University Forest, kicking around a rugby ball, or hitting the slopes in the winter.
