We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Assistant I, preferably with interests in genetics and neuroscience and a desire to gain additional laboratory experience prior to getting an advanced degree.

The Research Assistant will use CRISPR/Cas9 genetic engineering, advanced imaging techniques, molecular biology, and physiological assays to uncover mechanisms of cell organization in neurons and determine how its disruption leads to neuronal dysfunction.

Responsibilities:

  • C. elegans strain maintenance; genetic crosses.
  • Under the direction of senior lab staff, creation of new C. elegans strains including helping with the design of CRISPR editing strategies, microinjection, and genotyping.
  • Works independently and with lab team to modify and refine techniques and procedures to meet research objectives and troubleshoot new protocols. Manages multiple, concurrent projects or a multi-faceted project. Conducts a systematic and objective inquiry including experimental design, data collection and analysis.
  • Studies published literature to thoroughly understand projects and bring new ideas and techniques to the lab team.
  • Clearly and concisely conveys information verbally and in written form; effectively presents ideas. Presents research results and summaries at lab meetings and conferences; adheres to reporting requirements of research project(s).
  • Helps to train and mentor students and new lab personnel.

Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of biological sciences, as would normally be acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related subject with 1-2 years of laboratory experience.

Preferred skills and experiences:

  • PCR, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, western blotting. Experience with CRISPR/Cas-9 genetic editing will be an advantage. Experience with microinjection and a willingness to perfect this technique would also be highly desired.
  • The candidate should be diligent, able to work both independently and in a team environment, acquire new skills rapidly, and have versatility in a laboratory setting.
