So… what do CHEMISTS do?  Read on!

What do Chemists Do?

Chemists are the people who transform the every day materials around us into amazing things.  Some chemists work on cures for cancer, while others design new processes and materials for protecting the environment.  Still others discover new materials to make our homes warmer in the winter, or new textiles to be used in the latest fashions.  The knowledge gained through the study of chemistry opens many career pathways.  Upon graduating from UMaine Chemistry, some students choose to continue their education in graduate degree programs in chemistry, pharmacology or medicine.  Others are employed as research scientists in government or private laboratories.

Others choose to teach chemistry in private and public schools.  The American Chemical Society (ACS) is pleased to offer the ACS – Hach Land Grant Scholarship which provides financial support for chemistry majors who are in pursuit of becoming high school chemistry teachers. Recipients shall have a GPA of at least 3.0, be currently enrolled as an undergraduate chemistry major, or in a Master’s program having earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering with a commitment to becoming a chemistry teacher.  Financial need will be considered, but shall not be the determining factor in the selection. The current value of the scholarship is $26,298.   We have 2 ACS-Hach scholarships to offer at UMaine – each one valued at $10,000/year.  The scholarship is renewable each year.  This scholarship involves an application process.  The application process is available online from the ACS website or see the Chair for more information.

For a brief overview of the Chemistry Department, you can click on this youtube link that was developed in conjunction with the Admissions office. Featured in the video clip is Megan Arsenault.  Megan mentions she is a 3rd year Chemistry student.  She graduated with her B.S. degree (ACS Certified) in May 2021 and has settled in Tampa, FL and is working for a clinical research company studying the effects of sarcopenia.  We do hope you’ll consider UMaine Chemistry for your next adventure!
