CanAm Lecture Series: Pierre Anctil “New Interpretations of Montreal Jewish History”
We are pleased to announce that Professor Pierre Anctil of the University of Ottawa will be delivering a lecture on the history of Montreal’s Jewish community.
New research in French and Yiddish language sources has radically altered our understanding of Montreal Jewish history. These scholarly contributions have revealed the depth of Yiddish culture in Montreal in the twentieth century and the rich Yiddish literary production that it spawned. Relations of East-European Jews with the predominantly Francophone population have also received much attention from historians and a different picture is now emerging in this respect as well. The speaker will dwell on some key moments in the history of the Jewish community of Montreal and will pay particular attention to what has made this historical experience very different, in many respects, from the American one.
Please join us for this free, lunchtime event at 12PM on December 8, 2016 in the Coe Room at UMaine’s Memorial Union. Sandwiches will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Add this event to your online calendar or RSVP on Facebook! Contact Professor Frederic Rondeau with any questions.
